How to Build a Simple Wooden Plant Stand

Simple wooden plant stand with indoor plant on hardwood floor

If you want an easy woodworking project that instantly upgrades your home décor, this simple wooden plant stand is a perfect choice. With just a few boards and basic tools, you can build a stylish stand that fits modern, minimalist, or rustic room designs.

No advanced skills are needed — this project is perfect for beginners!

What You’ll Need

  • Four 1x2 boards for the legs
  • One board for the top platform (your choice of size)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue (optional)
  • Drill + drill bits
  • Saw (hand saw or miter saw)
  • Sandpaper
  • Stain or paint (optional)

1. Cut Your Wood Pieces

Measure and cut the four legs to the same height — usually between 12–18 inches depending on how tall you want the stand.

Next, cut two shorter cross-pieces and two longer ones to form the center support frame underneath the platform.

2. Build the Center Support

Lay out the four cross-pieces in a rectangular shape. Attach them with screws or wood glue, making sure everything is square and level. This support frame will strengthen the stand and keep it stable.

3. Attach the Legs

Screw each leg onto the corners of the support frame. Make sure all legs sit straight and even — slight misalignment can make the stand wobble. Tighten screws securely.

4. Attach the Top Platform

Place your top board on the frame and center it. Drill pilot holes and secure it with screws from the underside. This hides the screw heads and gives your stand a clean, seamless look.

5. Sand and Finish

Sand the entire stand until smooth, focusing on the edges. Wipe off dust and either:

  • Leave the natural wood look
  • Apply a stain
  • Paint it to match your décor

Let it dry completely before placing your plant on top.

Enjoy Your New Plant Stand!

This simple project adds height, style, and warmth to any room. Try making multiple stands in different sizes to display more plants and create a layered look!
